The Lord Jesus Christ has won a complete victory over Satan for all mankind through His death on the Cross and His resurrection from the dead.

The Scripture clearly states that Christ “rid himself of all the Powers of Evil, and held them up to open contempt, when he celebrated his triumph over them on the cross!” (Col. 2:15 TCNT).

Christ’s triumph over Satan on the Cross is not a partial, gradual or progressive victory; it is absolute, total, complete, perfect and final.

Hebrews 2:

14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (NKJV).

Christ’s triumph is not for Himself, but for all those who put their trust in Him and His finished work on the Cross. All the benefits or profits of Christ’s death and resurrection have been credited to the account of the believers in Christ.

Although the Lord Jesus Christ has won for the entire mankind a total, complete, perfect and final victory through His death on the Cross, yet Satan is still given a short time to live and operate in the world before he will be eternally quashed, subjugated and cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 12:12, 20:10).

Until the close of the ages when Satan and all his cohorts will be bound and cast into the lake of fire to be tormented day and night forever and ever, the believers still have Satan and his cohorts to wrestle or contend against in spiritual warfare. This ongoing spiritual warfare does not undermine, question, or belittle the absolute victory that Christ has won for the believers on the Cross.

The born-again believers are in spiritual warfare against Satan and his cohorts not to contend for victory, but to appropriate, enforce, defend and demonstrate daily the absolute victory they already have in Christ through His death on the Cross (1 Cor. 15:57, 2 Cor. 2:14).

Sadly, many believers today are ignorantly contending or wrestling in spiritual warfare for the victory they already have in Christ and through Christ’s death on the Cross. This is the main reason for the defeat, failure or frustration in spiritual warfare that many believers today are experiencing.

Here are some basic truths about spiritual warfare that every believer must know, believe and apply in order to fully and consistently appropriate, enforce, defend and demonstrate the absolute victory that Christ has already won for him over all the powers of evil.

First, the believers are not engaged in a Physical Warfare:

The Scripture forbids the believers from seeking revenge or being engaged in any physical brawl or fight against his enemies when persecuted for Christ’s sake because our battle against our enemies is a spiritual one (Prov. 20:22, 24:29, Rom. 12:17-21, 1 Thess. 5:15)..

Matthew 5:
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
41 “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45 “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (NKJV).

Second, the Weapons of our Warfare are not Physical, Carnal or Earthly:

Because the believers are not engaged in a physical warfare against Satan and his cohorts no physical, fleshly, earthly or worldly armour or weapon can be used or utilized in spiritual warfare (2 Cor. 10:3-6, Eph. 6:10-18, Phil. 2:9-11, Rev. 11:19, 12:11).

2 Corinthians 10:
3 For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war,
4 for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. (RSV).

God has prepared and provided whole or full spiritual armour for the believers to take up, put on, or utilize in spiritual warfare to resist or stand against the wiles, deceptions, schemes or manipulations of Satan.

Many believers today are vulnerable to Satan’s wiles and attacks because they choose not to put on, wield or appropriate the spiritual armour or weapons of warfare at their disposal.

The Scripture commands, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Eph. 6:11 NKJV).

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” (Eph. 6:13 NKJV).

Third, the Believer’s real Enemies are not Human (flesh and blood):

The born-again believers are not in spiritual warfare against their fellow human beings who may hate, hurt, betray, persecute, or seek to cheat or exploit them (Luke 23:33-34). Sadly, Satan has deceived many believers today into wrestling or contending against their fellow men or women while they erroneously think they are fighting spiritual warfare.

Your real opponents or enemies in spiritual warfare are Satan and his demons, not any man or woman notwithstanding his or her attitude or disposition towards you.

Ephesians 6:

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (NKJV).

When you focus on human beings as your opponents in spiritual warfare, you have been deceived and manipulated by your real enemy – Satan. It is ignorance, foolishness or spiritual immaturity to exhaust your strength on fighting people and not on fighting your real enemies – Satan and his demons.

Fourth, the Battleground is the Believer’s Mind:

You either stand against or fall for the wiles or lies of Satan in your mind. Satan always strives to keep believers in perpetual bondage or slavery and hinders them from enjoying God’s blessings in Christ by seeking to build strongholds, imaginations, arguments or reasonings in their minds which are contrary to the truths of God’s Word.

But, God has provided for the believers effective spiritual weapons of warfare that can demolish, pull down and destroy every stronghold, imagination, argument or reasoning from Satan. Unfortunately, many believers don’t take up and utilize these weapons effectively.

The Scripture states: “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:4-5 NKJV).

When you allow Satan to gain a foothold in your mind, he will eventually take a full control of your mind, thereby influencing, dominating or controlling your thoughts, words, emotions and actions. The result will be fear, restlessness, failure, frustration, defeat or death in spiritual warfare.

The primary reason why many believers today are not appropriating, experiencing or demonstrating the victory that Christ has won and given to them is because they are failing in bringing every hostile thought from Satan to the obedience of Christ.

Your experience in life is largely determined by the thoughts you allow to dominate, prevail or rule in your mind.

The Scripture warns:

“For as the thoughts of his heart are, so is he…” (Prov. 23:7 BBE).

“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Rom. 8:6 NKJV).

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” (Prov. 4:23 NKJV).

When you allow God’s Spirit through God’s Word to control, dominate, saturate, renew or sanctify your mind, you will always experience, enjoy, manifest or demonstrate the victory that Christ has already won for you over Satan and all his cohorts.

Therefore, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Col. 3:16 NKJV).

Fifth, Spiritual Warfare is primarily a War of Words:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Prov. 18:21). Therefore, your experience in spiritual warfare is largely determined by the use of your tongue.

When you rightly and constantly use your tongue to affirm, confess, declare or proclaim your victory in Christ, you will always see, experience and enjoy victory in spiritual warfare. Jesus said, “…he will have whatever he says.” (Mark 11:23 NKJV).

Satan will always seek to manipulate you or the people around you to use their tongues to speak forth and release defeat, failure, poverty, sickness, or death into your life, family, finances, career, or business.

When you keep your mouth shut when Satan, through his agents or through false dreams, visions, or prophecies, is speaking or pouring forth death into your life, you have already conceded defeat or yielded to Satan (Isa. 14:12-17, Psa. 2:1-7).

The Scripture admonishes you to judge, condemn or confute every evil tongue which rises against you in judgement.

Isaiah 54:

17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD.” (NKJV).

That is the only way that the weapons of the enemy against you will not prosper.

The armies of Israel led by Saul cringed before Goliath for forty days and nights because they shut their mouths when Goliath was defying them by his words (1 Sam. 17:8-10). The situation changed when David came on the stage and boldly replied Goliath, condemning his tongue.

When Goliath said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” (1 Sam. 17:44 NKJV).

David promptly condemned his tongue, saying, “This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” (1 Sam. 17:46 NKJV).

That is the way to resist or confront your enemy and thus enforce and demonstrate your victory in Christ. When the enemy is speaking forth death into your life, if you don’t resist, reply, or condemn his tongue; you will come under the negative influence of the evil words the enemy has spoken (Rev. 16-13-14).

Your mouth is very crucial to experiencing or demonstrating daily victory in spiritual warfare. Your mouth is the nozzle or launching pad for all the weapons of warfare the Lord has given you to enforce, defend or demonstrate the victory that Christ has already won and given to you.

This is why Jesus promised His disciples, saying, “For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.” (Luke 21:15 NKJV).

The Scripture said concerning Jesus in the book of Revelation, “Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” (Rev. 19:15 NKJV).

The same is true of you. When you speak God’s Word in faith, you are simply wielding or releasing the Sword of the Spirit against your enemy (Eph. 6:17)!

You are not using any of your spiritual weapons of warfare effectively until you learn to open your mouth promptly to reject and condemn every evil tongue and word against you.

Sixth, the Believers already have the Victory in and through Christ Jesus:

The believers are not in spiritual warfare to fight, wrestle or contend against Satan for victory. Sadly, many believers today who claim to be fighting in spiritual warfare are striving to gain victory over Satan and his cohorts. This mindset is the primary cause of their constant fear and defeat in spiritual battles.

The believers are not called and equipped by God to fight in spiritual warfare to gain victory over Satan and his cohorts and works. This is a pivotal truth!

The Scripture clearly teaches that the believers have already won and gained victory over Satan and his demons through the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. This victory is not a partial, incomplete, gradual or ongoing victory; it is an absolute, total, final, complete, perfect and permanent victory.

The Scripture amply testifies to this truth.

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” (Heb. 2:14-15 NKJV).

“He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8 NKJV)

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.” (Col. 2:15 NKJV).

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 15:57 NKJV).

As a born-again believer in Christ, you already have the victory in Christ and through Christ. You must wage warfare with this mindset.

The devil will always seek to trick, confuse, or deceive you into seeking to fight to have or gain victory, thereby robbing you of the victory you already have in and through Jesus Christ. But, you must always stand firm in the victory that Jesus Christ has won for you and fight in victory (Gal. 5:1).

If it is true that Christ through His death on the Cross has defeated and destroyed Satan and all his works once and for all, why then do believers still need to contend or wrestle with Satan in spiritual warfare?

To appropriate, defend, enforce, manifest or demonstrate the victory that Christ has won for them over Satan and all his cohorts and works!

To demonstrate the preeminence of Christ over all things!

Seventh, there is no Truce or Respite in this Warfare:

Satan is an unrepentant or sworn enemy of God and His children. He will never stop seeking to control, exploit, deceive or manipulate you, and to steal from you the blessings you already have in Christ.

Therefore, don’t ever seek to negotiate with, appease or pacify Satan by any means. Satan vehemently hates you and he will never change his mind or disposition towards you (Rev. 12:12, 17, John 10:10).

Beloved, there is no truce, respite or ceasefire in spiritual warfare. Therefore, you must always be watchful and prayerful, putting on the whole armour of God so that you may be able to resist Satan and stand against all his wiles.

Don’t take off your armour of warfare or lay down your spiritual weapons until the very end, when you receive your crown of righteousness as an overcomer (2 Tim. 4:7-8, Rev. 21:7).

The Scripture admonishes us to “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” (1 Pet. 5:8-9 NKJV).

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Eph. 6:10-11 NKJV).
