It is God’s desire and delight to have a personal, intimate, and unique relationship with every one of His children. This kind of intimate relationship is not possible without an effective and continuous communication.
Many children of God today are neither enjoying their relationship with God nor growing in their intimacy with God because they only know how to shout at God in prayer, bombarding Him daily with their many and varied requests. But they are not inclining or tuning up their ears to hear and listen to what God also has to say to them.
Hearing God’s voice is not a special gift exclusively reserved for a special class of believers. Every born again believer has a divine inherent capacity to hear and recognize God’s voice. Every genuinely born again believer has an inbuilt divine receiver to pick, receive, decode or process spiritual signals or waves.
The believer’s regenerated spirit is born of God’s Spirit and securely connected with God’s Spirit. Therefore, every believer can hear, recognize or discern God’s voice. Jesus said: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (John 10:27 NKJV).
The Scripture also testifies: “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. “And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” (John 10:3-4 NKJV).
Everyone born of God has God-given potential or ability within him to hear, recognize or discern God’s voice. However, this potential needs to be developed. When you are born again, you become one spirit with Christ (1 Cor. 6:17). Therefore, you can communicate with God who is Spirit without any inhibition (John 4:24).
Your regenerated or recreated spirit has God’s unction to know and recognize the truth. The Scripture testifies: “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.” (1 John 2:20-21 NKJV).
There are undoubtedly many strange spirits and voices in the world today clamouring for your attention and seeking to confuse, deceive, and distract you from hearing and obeying the voice of Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd.
This is why the Scripture admonishes: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1 NKJV).
Although you are God’s sheep, yet you are living and walking daily among ferocious wolves in the world. Your safety absolutely depends on your ability to hear, recognize, and respond promptly to the voice of your Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is therefore very crucial for you sheep to develop your inherent spiritual ability to hear and discern the voice of the Lord from that of a stranger, a deceiver or a manipulator. Here are some basic truths you need to know about God’s voice.
First, God is sovereign and cannot be confined to your mental box or paradigm of experience:
Seeking to force God to speak to you in a particular way, on a particular issue, at a particular time or a particular place may open you up to demonic manipulation and deception. What is expected of you is to always be sensitive and receptive to God.
God holds the exclusive right or prerogative to decide how, when, what and where to speak with His children.
The Scripture says: “For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction. In order to turn man from his deed, and conceal pride from man, He keeps back his soul from the Pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.” (Job 33:14-18 NKJV).
Second, God’s voice always wholly conform to God’s written word, the Bible:
When God speaks to you either audibly or quietly in your spirit, or through prophecies from others, or through visions, dreams, trances, or through divine providence, or divinely orchestrated circumstances; it will never contradict Christ’s words or teachings in the New Testament.
The words or teachings of Christ are God’s ultimate standard or index for testing and judging every voice, prophecy, vision or dream.
The Scripture testifies: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.” (Heb. 1:1-2 NKJV).
If it contradicts what Christ has said or taught in the Bible, then it is not from God’s station!
The Bible is the primary index and standard for judging whatever any spirit, angel, prophet or voice says to you. The Bible is the surest and perfect word of God for all ages.
Any voice that speaks or instructs you contrary to what is written in the Bible is a stranger’s voice; you must not obey it. Any prophet or pastor that commands or instructs you contrary to the doctrines and teachings of Christ and His early apostles is a deceiver and manipulator; you must flee from him.
Any spirit or angel that asks you to do any ritual or sacrifice is a deceiving spirit; you must rebuke and bind it. Jesus Christ is the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. By His death, He has fulfilled and abolished all the ceremonial laws and rituals in the Old Testament. Anyone who therefore instructs you to do any rituals or offer any sacrifices to obtain deliverance from demonic oppression is an agent of darkness.
The Scripture warns: “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.” (2 Cor. 11:13 NKJV).
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits…” (Matt. 7:15-16 NKJV).
Don’t believe or obey any voice until you have tested it by the written word of God. Flee from any minister of God who pressurizes you to instantly obey his commands or words even though they don’t wholly conform to Christ’s teachings.
The Scripture says: “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isa. 8:20 NKJV).
Therefore, you need to spend quality time daily to prayerfully read, study, meditate upon, and understand God’s Word. It is your divine gauge or litmus for discerning the voice of the Lord from that of an impostor or manipulator.
Third, God’s voice is always consistent with God’s nature:
God’s station or channel will never transmit anything that is contrary to God’s nature. God is holy; He will therefore not by any means encourage you to say or do anything that is ungodly or unholy. Any voice, prophecy, vision or dream that encourages or promotes ungodliness or unrighteousness is not from God, but from Satan.
God is love; He will therefore not speak hateful or hurtful words to you. Neither will God tell you to hate or hurt anyone. God is peaceful; His voice or vision will therefore not transmit fear, depression, or sorrow to you, but faith, confidence, boldness, comfort, peace and joy (Jer. 15:16, Rom. 10:17, John 14:27).
The Scripture states: “I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace To His people and to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly.” (Psa. 85:8 NKJV).
Fourth, God’s voice is always authoritative:
Although God does not threaten or frighten His children with His voice or vision, yet God’s voice carries a divine power that can jolt you, burn within your heart, and penetrate deep into your innermost being.
The disciples who Jesus spoke with on the way to Emmaus said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32 NKJV).
Although God does not force His will on us, yet when He speaks, His voice is weighty, powerful, firm and authoritative, but not coaxing or persuasive.
The Scripture testifies: “The voice of the LORD is powerful; The voice of the LORD is full of majesty. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon.” (Psa. 29:4-5 NKJV).
Fifth, God’s voice convicts but does not condemn:
God can warn us by His voice, but He will not frighten us with His voice. God’s voice or word can result in conviction of sins, but will never bring condemnation to His children (John 16:8-11, Rom. 8:11).
God can rebuke and correct His children through prophecy or vision, but He will never reproach, criticize and condemn them. Jesus testified to this by saying to the woman caught in the very act of adultery, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” (John 8:11 NKJV).
Therefore, any voice which constantly accuses, condemns, reproaches, frightens, despises or scorns you is not God’s voice.
Sixth, God’s voice is steadfast, convincing and confirmable:
God’s voice is sure, stable, unwavering, and reliable. God’s voice neither deceives nor confuses His children. God will not say one thing to you and say another thing to someone else on the same issue. Whatever God speaks to you can be confirmed by others, especially mature believers. (Jam. 1:17).
If anyone gives you a word, vision or prophecy from God, it is always good to receive a personal confirmation from God before you act upon such.
The Scripture says: “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” (2 Cor. 13:1 NKJV).
Beware of any prophet who always forces or pressurizes you to believe, obey or act upon any word, vision or prophecy he claims to receive for you from God without giving you time to seek God’s face for a personal confirmation of such (1 John 4:1).
Lastly, God’s voice always imparts or transmits love, peace, joy, faith, righteousness, comfort, hope, encouragement, confidence or assurance:
There are massive bands of radio and television waves in the air, but you can neither see nor hear the things that are being transmitted until you have a good receiver which is usually integrated in your TV and radio set to pick and process the transmitted waves or signals.
Moreover, what you hear or see primarily depend on the frequency you tune into. You can easily identify or recognize the channel or frequency you have tuned into by what is being transmitted – what you hear or see on your set. Spiritually, the same rule is applicable. You can discern or differentiate between God’s voice and Satan’s voice by what is being transmitted to you.
If you are constantly experiencing and expressing fear, sorrow, depression, discouragement, shame, or confusion, then you have not been tuning into God’s channel and hearing His voice. If you don’t like what your radio or TV set is broadcasting to you, what do you do? Simply change the channel or tune into another frequency!
If you don’t like what you are experiencing or expressing in life, then you need to switch or tune into God’s station or frequency, for it is who or what you constantly hear or listen to that will saturate, invade, possess, dominate, or control your life.
Friend, switch and stay hooked unto God’s frequency today and begin to receive unceasing transmission of divine waves of love, peace, joy, comfort, hope, faith and confidence.
